Résumé : |
It begins with a former Rhodesia CID officer, Harry Stone, known as Harry the Valet, making his way to England in order to avoid being found out for being a fraud. But Captain Timothy 'Tiger' Jordan, Chief of the Rhodesia CID traces him and calls on him at his hotel. Harry then trips up to Scotland where he discovers that a certain Lew Daney had committed a robbery at the Lower Clyde Bank. Wanting nothing to do with Daney, Harry makes his way back to London.
There follows plenty of toing and froing and meeting various people but nothing seems to fit together and this reader was wondering what was going on and why. At least there was a bit of love interest for Mary Greir had come upon the scene and made her way to London, where by then everyone concerned had seemingly gathered! Tim Jordan establishes himself at the Carlton, thus the title, and investigations begin into who Daney was and where he was. Nobody seemed to know, particularly the reader! There is plenty of meaningless dialogue and a little action here and there but perhaps one of the most telling lines involved Mary when 'She left Tim puzzled' - as we all did and were, puzzled that is. Anyway there is a denouement but I am not too sure what it represents although the love between Mary and one of the protagonists looks as though it would be fulfilled. Thank goodness something good came out of this rambling, sometimes incoherent novel. |
